SURFACE TYPES

Smart Design is available in a variety of surfaces including glass, polycarbonate, acrylic, and resins and can be used in a wide array of applications, project types, and built settings.  From a singular use locally to complete roll-out globally, please let our Smart Designs Representative help you to select the right surface, size, finish, and configuration to meet your project needs.

GLASS

Available Gauges: 1/8”, 3/16”, 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2”
Standard Dimensions: Up to 48″ x 96″
Custom Dimensions: Up to 118″ x 204″

In a world focused on transparency, glass remains a remarkable product.  From benefits ranging from strength and heat resistance to clarity and brilliance, glass in its variety of sizes and thicknesses, brings a natural elegant and intrinsic beauty to Smart Designs typically not found elsewhere.

In fact, colors, organics, metals, inorganics, textiles, textures, and digital images, incorporated between layers of glass, draw on the attributes of each material, expands upon their knowns, and brings new solutions to architecture, interior design, and environmental graphics.  Within glass, flexible materials can now exceed their physical limits, delicate finishes find protection, visibility is brought to opposite surfaces, and “what if” features, from safety to fire resistant, now a viable and standard option.

Furthermore, within float, annealed and tempered glass, materials with aesthetic qualities, from a range available resources, can find renew life incorporated into horizontal, vertical, and curved surfaces both as part of the built space to the items incorporated within.  Again, when it comes to Smart Designs and this versatile transparent material, it’s truly possible to be and go beyond often mentioned glass ceiling.

POLYCARBONATE

Available Gauges: 1/16″, 1/8”, 3/16”, 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2”
Standard Dimensions: Up to 48″ x 96″
Custom Dimensions: Up to 96″ x 144″

When it comes to environments or applications where strength, weight, weather resistant, and clarity of a transparent finish surface need to find the right balance, polycarbonate is the unofficial title holder. Like a champion bantam fighter, polycarbonate is light weight, able to resistant extreme amounts of force, and has an impact rating 30x stronger than acrylic and 250x stronger than float glass.

Virtually unbreakable while able to be formed and bent, Smart Designs range of colors, organics, metals, inorganics, textiles, textures, and digital images, incorporated between layers of this thermoplastic, provide Architects, Interior Designers, and Graphic Specialists with vast array of solutions to meet the functional and aesthetic need of almost any application.  In fact, with the UV blocking capability of this polymer and resistance to cold, heat, and many chemicals, Smart Designs featured in polycarbonate have the ability to be front and center in any kind of marketplace where durability and installation are a factor.

Again, not in the heavy weight class of glass, nor as rigid or scratch resistant, but when it comes to design impact, cost, and ease of transport, Polycarbonate is always in the ring of design choices.

ACRYLIC

Available Gauges: 1/16″, 1/8”, 3/16”, 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2”
Standard Dimensions: Up to 48″ x 96″
Custom Dimensions: Up to 96″ x 144″

While sharing many of the dimensions, sizes, forms, and options available with other polymers, acrylic is the see-through product of choice within Smart Designs when clarity, light transmission, and UV resistant are important requirements.  Weighing less than half of a similar size piece of glass, acrylic is not only 17x stronger but has the added advantage with Smart Designs by being easy to cut, polish, heat formed, and joint together to create one of a kind solutions to complete rollouts.

In fact, Smart Designs wide array of colors, metals, textiles, textures, and digital images, incorporated between this thermoplastic, have been a go to product of Architects and Interior Designer for over a decade while unique offerings and advances in organics, inorganics, and metals have been of major interest to Industrial and Graphic Designers on the forefront of identity, branding, signage, and product design.

Again, the choice of acrylic with Smart Designs, like any of our transparent surfaces, depends entirely on the application and given conditions. What works best in one location may not be the product of choice in another and what is ideal in a controlled environment might not be suited to the great outdoors.  However, with Smart Designs, and its array of designs, decors, and surfaces at the ready, know we have the solutions to meet your requirements and exceed your design expectations.

Among Architects, Interior Designers and Graphic Specialists, the idea of suspending decorative materials within polymer and acrylic resins is often seen as the application of some newly discovered finding or unique scientific principle. Like the audience who is captivated by the magician’s ability to levitate his/her assistant with great ease, the design communities’ response to the suspending of almost any type or shape of décor, within a hardened transparent surface, has been one of amazement and pure excitement.

In fact, from a discovery nearly a century old, Smart Designs has been a leader in the suspending of organics, metals, inorganics, textiles, and textures, within liquid acrylic resins that can harden to form stiff, dense, and tough surfaces. Clear, colorless, and with good thermal and chemical resistance, acrylic resins have the ability to provide Architects, Interior Designers, and Graphic Specialists with a vast array of new and differing solutions to meet the functional and aesthetic needs of almost any application. Want to provide greater strength and durability to a dimensional design or object(s) while maintaining their appearance and original integrity, then encapsulating it within acrylic resin might be the right surface choice for your corporate, hospitality, or healthcare project.
